Why THE ABBEY?

Because, often in early Christianity, the abbey was not only a church building, but also a community center—the center of not only worship in song and spoken word, but also in study, art, and even science. THE ABBEY represents a time when the church’s presence was highly RELEVANT in the community, central and supportive in the affairs of daily life. The ABBEY concept represents a rebirth of the fervor and devotion of the early church, translated into the confusing times in which we live. THE ABBEY is a safe harbor in a world seeking refuge.

Because, the name “THE ABBEY” is both familiar and yet unfamiliar. It speaks of devotion and tradition and yet, at least in the U.S., is unencumbered with religious baggage and expectation. It honors the concept of local church without limiting it. It hints at the local church’s involvement in broader Kingdom realities. Upon hearing the name, “The Abbey,” no seeker could think, “Seen it before,,” and once they experienced it, they would agree that it was much more than the word “church” had conjured in their mind. The Abbey is a concept within which the church can thrive but from which the Kingdom can be thrust.
